Speciality Coatings was founded in 2023 by seasoned industry professionals who identified a clear gap in the market: coating systems that genuinely perform, backed by people who understand real-world site conditions. Rather than simply importing and reselling products, the goal from day one was to develop proprietary solutions that contractors, builders, and property owners could rely on — designed by people who have faced the same challenges on the tools.

Since launching, Speciality Coatings has rapidly expanded its product range and distribution network across New Zealand and internationally. From advanced waterproofing membranes and roof coatings to primers and protective systems, every product has been developed through close collaboration with applicators and distributors — turning a startup manufacturer into a recognised supplier of innovative coating solutions.

Today, Speciality Coatings manufactures and supplies coating systems used across residential, commercial, and industrial projects throughout New Zealand and beyond. We continue to invest in product development, offer hands-on technical support, and build a reputation grounded in performance, reliability, and long-term relationships.

Speciality Coatings is led by industry professionals who combine decades of hands-on trade experience with deep expertise in coating chemistry and formulation — practical knowledge on the tools, matched with the science behind the product.

Roy Hengeveld

Director & Founder

Roy brings a rare combination of on-the-tools experience and proven business acumen to Speciality Coatings. Before entering the coatings industry, he served nearly five years with the Dutch Red Berets — an experience that instilled the discipline, resilience, and attention to detail that define his leadership today.

After his military service, Roy founded and grew a successful painting company in the Netherlands, later expanding into UV flooring. Both businesses were sold in 2017. In 2018, he and his family immigrated to New Zealand in search of a better quality of life, settling in the Waikato — a region that matched his values of hard work, community, and family.

Recognising a clear gap in the market for coating systems that genuinely perform, Roy founded Speciality Coatings with a mission to build high-performance products backed by genuine industry knowledge and real-world site experience.

Today Roy leads business development, customer relationships, and product strategy — ensuring every Speciality Coatings product is built to perform not just in the lab, but on-site.
